Travel Purpose: leisure
Positive: The journey from the airport to Estoril was very easy - you get the metro and then change to the overground. It takes about an hour and a half in total. The apartment is about a 20 min walk uphill from the front. The apartment block is very nice, very quiet, we didnt hear anyone else but there seemed to be a mix of residents and tourists there. The apartment is on the 4th floor with a nice balcony and sea view. The apartment is well equipped although as someone pointed out there are no tea spoons. It would be nice to have had some more towels. The TV was a bit difficult to work out as there were 2 remotes - the first few days we could only get the smart tv to work, but then that stopped working and we then could only get the normal tv channels. Not a major problem but it would be nice to have some instructions. The front door is a bit tricky to unlock, you have to turn the key and either pull or push the door but once you get the hang of it is fine. There was a nice supermarket (Continente) at the bottom of the street which had a nice bakery section. There was also a newsagents around the corner which sold english papers and magazines. The beach was very nice although there are no sunbeds which was disappointing although you can hire sunbeds nearer to Cascais but they are very expensive 35 euros per day and very tightly packed together so you can move around so we ended up buying 2 chairs and a blanket . The owner was very qucik to respond to any questions and very helpful.
Negative: There was a bit of a mix up checking in. Checkin in time was 4pm which seemed late. As we were getting a very early flight I asked if we could drop off our cases about 2pm and go back out which was agreed. However when we got to the property the keys werent in the lock box., the previous occupants had left the keys inside the apartment. I contacted the owner who responsed very quickly but we ended up having to wait outside the apartment until 4.30 pm before the mangaement company arrived to let us in. The apartment hadnt been serviced, in fact we bumped into the cleaners leaving at 7pm when we went back to the apartment. So a bit of a disappointing start to the holiday. It would be nice to have some extra towels. We werent overkeen on Estoril as a holiday destination. There is no centre or focal point, the town is very residential, just big expensive houses and flats and a couple of big hotels. The casino seems to be the only draw to the area. There are no shops apart from the supermarket, newsagent, and a very expensive dress shop. Although there are restaurants dotted around in the surrounding streets they didnt feel very holidayish as they are not near the front so werent very inspiring. We ended up walking into Cascais every night which is more of a holiday resort. You can walk along the promenade which takes about 20 - 25 minutes or walk along the main road although it is a busy dual carriageway. The promenade to Cascais has a handful of daytime cafe bars but again there are no shops along the way so its not a partiicularly interesting walk. At the Estoril end it all looks a bit tired - there was obvisouly more shops or cafes in the past but theese are all boarded up now so again its not very inspiring. Cascais is a mix of very upmarket shops (closed at night) and restaurants, but then the main shopping street is full of tourist tat shops all selling the same things which seemed disappointing.
Summary: Nice apartment but wasnt overkeen on Estoril as a holiday destination, much preferred Cascais.
