this historic 1,094 sf home was hand-built by celebrated artist ellwood graham, an artist with ties to john steinbeck** It was built by the artist to be asymmetrical and in true mid-century style celebrates the natural world with redwood and a great many windows. One remarkable feature is the tile, brick and stonework on the floors, as well as the copper and brick decorative fireplaces.

the asymmetrical mid century living room looks out onto the garden through a bank of windows that flood the space with light The floors are made with unique brick and tile laid by the original builder. The room is filled with comfortable seating and a large flat screen Smart TV with Comcast cable and handmade brick and copper decorative fireplace, now filled with candles. Antique wooden double doors lead to the garden. well-equipped for extended stays!

Steinbeck was a friend and spent time writing parts of Tortilla Flat in this home while being painted from varying points of view by the couple.
ellwood graham gained early success as the first abstract impressionist in the west and became nationally known as the first modern pictographer The whereabouts of his painting of Steinbeck is a mystery. Graham’s wife’s painting of Steinbeck (painting as Judith Deim) can be found at San Jose State University.
