Positive: APARTMENT: For me this was a perfect apartment for a holiday in the Black Forest. The owners have tastefully decorated the place and used clever IKEA furniture. It has a living/bedroom area, very small galley kitchen, and bathroom. There is a double bed, a comfortable sofa bed, a table which can be folded away, and four chairs. The kitchen manages a two-hob electric stove, mini-oven, toaster, kettle, coffee machine, and fridge. It is well equipped with everything from pans and knives to a fondue set and German beer glasses. The apartment also has a high chair, coffee tables, TV (with HDMI cable), and plenty of cupboards. Everything we needed! The living area has double doors onto a patio with chairs and table, and catches the evening sun. The bathroom has a good shower, and the apartment has powerful heating and hot water. It was entirely clean throughout. OWNERS: The owner was very kind and hospitable, answering questions, and giving advice about the area. Although there is self check-in, the owner came to meet us on the first evening. I felt she was happy to be renting the apartment and really wanted us to have a good stay. And we had a brilliant stay! FACILITIES: The apartment is in a complex of privately-owned apartments. Many of them seem to be short term holiday rentals. The complex has a large swimming pool (open 7:00 - 20:30, except Wed when it opens at 10:00) and pay-to-use sauna, a good exercise room, a games room with table tennis (the apartment has bats and balls provided) and table football, plus a TV room. There is wifi throughout the complex. The apartment is on the third floor and there is a lift. LOCATION: Schönwald is a classy village at the height of a mountain. It has some winter sports facilities. There are several restaurants, a small supermarket, and other shops. A short drive or good 5 km hike down is Triberg village, full of tourists and with the famous waterfalls. The other direction is a larger town with more facilities.
Negative: The wifi takes time to recognise a device every time you come back to the complex. This is outside the control of the apartment owners. Once connected, the wifi is fast and stable. The booking was made with booking.com, and handled by a company called Holidu. Holidu used a trick of "cancelling" the reservation, asking me to go within 24 hours to their website to make the payment. I think they did this to ensure two-factor authentication on the credit card. I felt it was unsettling to receive a message saying your reservation was being cancelled unless you act immediately! This was not the fault of the apartment owners but of Holidu. In the end the payment process was smooth. Absolutely would stay here again!
